After deciding to dump diet culture and make a move towards finding peace with food and your body, what do you do from here? Many people have heard of ‘Intuitive Eating’, but what does it actually mean?
Intuitive Eating is almost like an anti-diet! Where diets tell you when, what and how much you can eat (along with what you can’t eat as well!), intuitive eating is all about honouring your body’s natural and normal physical cues for hunger, fullness and appetite. Our bodies are super clever and send us information all the time about what we need, or don’t need, and we can use this information to help guide us to eat and look after our bodies the best way to suit our individual needs.
Moving towards an intuitive eating style means learning to “listen” to your body’s natural physical cues for hunger and fullness and even appetite. It also means being more mindful so that you are in the moment and can “hear” your body’s cues more clearly, and then begin to experiment with responding to your body’s cues so you can learn how to understand the messages your body is sending you and how to answer those messages. That way you can feel comfortable, confident and able to look after yourself the best way possible for your individual needs!
If you are struggling with when, what and how much to eat or unhappy with your relationship with food and eating and are ready to make a change, it may be the right time for you to seek the assistance of a qualified HAES, Non-Diet Approach dietitian to help guide you through the process back to a place of peace and confidence with food and your body.
